Diwali

One of the biggest festivals in the Hindu religion is Diwali (festival of light), which is celebrated with a lot of happiness and enthusiasm for the coming new year.  Celebration of Diwali varies depending on the region of India one belongs to. Hindus celebrate Diwali because it represents Lord Rama defeating the evil, Ravan.  Some also view it as the day Lord Krishna defeated the demon Narakasura.

On this day, homes are thoroughly cleaned and candles/lamps are lit to welcome Laksmi, (goddess of wealth).  Throughout the day, people give each other sweets and gifts. In the evening, Lakshmi pooja is performed to seek blessings from the goddess and fireworks occur to frighten away the evil spirit. In conclusion, the focus of this day is to promote good over evil and to spread positive energy at home and in society.
